Embassies and letters between The Frank Merovingians and Byzantium "Challenges and Response" (507-590)

The Frankish-Byzantine relations were special. They began with the settlement of the Franks in Gaul, and these relations were strengthened when the Frankish king Clovis I converted to Christianity according to the Catholic doctrine, in contravention of all other Germanic tribes. This made the Byzantine Empire consider the expansions of King Clovis in Gaul to take place in the original on her behalf, and then she legitimately ceded Gaul to King Clovis, and King Clovis became from that point on for the Romans, not just a barbarian invader, but rather one of the most senior leaders in the Roman Empire. But in reality, the Merovingians did not accept such loyalty to the Byzantines except when they needed the support and endorsement of the Roman garrisons in Gaul in their war against the Visigoths or Alemanni, Avars, and others. When the Franks subjugated those tribes their state’s support increased and their power increased, they did not show this loyalty to the Byzantines. Therefore, the relationship between the Byzantines and the Franks was friendly as long as it was in the interest of both parties to keep this friendliness prevailing.
