The relationship between Mauritanian cities and their hinterland: The case of Boutilimit

Abstract

The city of Boutilimit has undergone significant transformations that have altered its demographic size, social composition, spatial organization, and distinctive functions. The urban expansion and dynamics shaping the city are reflected in the gradual increase of its geographical footprint, primarily due to rural migration triggered by severe droughts in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Large numbers of rural inhabitants moved to the city, which was not adequately prepared to accommodate them in terms of essential services, leading to the emergence of numerous urban challenges.

The study concludes that Boutilimit has a clear influence on its hinterland, characterized by a reciprocal relationship of action and reaction—mutual influence and interdependence. The analysis of service diffusion factors reveals that the city exerts a strong influence on its immediate and intermediate hinterland, while its impact on the distant hinterland remains relatively limited.
