In directing the maintenance of international peace and security, the United Nations relies on a number of means and mechanisms, some of which fall within the traditional frameworks known in international law, and some of which represent a necessary measure in a situation of conflict that requires a quick means to contain it or prevent its development or escalation. The United Nations has multiple means or mechanisms for maintaining international peace and security included in the Charter, which are peaceful means and mechanisms and non-peaceful means. Chapter Six is devoted to peaceful means for resolving international conflicts, which must be followed to maintain international peace and security. As for non-peaceful means, they are specified in Chapter Seven of the Charter. There is a mechanism that was not mentioned in the Charter, but it was invented in order to implement international peace and security, which is international peacekeeping operations. Maintaining international peace and security is considered one of the most important challenges faced by the United Nations. In order to achieve this goal, it encountered many difficulties that led to its inability to perform its tasks. In the face of this, it was inventedIn order to achieve this goal, it encountered many difficulties that led to its inability to perform its tasks. In view of this, the United Nations devised a mechanism that achieves a degree of stability in many areas of tension around the world by confronting various types of international conflicts and crises. This mechanism was called international peace and security operations, but this mechanism was notIt is specifically defined in the Charter, as it represents a measure dictated by the urgent need to compensate for the inability of the Security Council in the field of maintaining international peace and security, on the one hand, and on the other hand, as a measure born of necessity in light of the development of international relations, the increasing processes of liberation, and the emergence of armed conflicts that were not common before. The Charter of the United Nations did not addressTo address them, such as internal and ethnic conflicts, which may take the form of exile, displacement, ethnic cleansing, genocide, etc.Perhaps more importantly, it is sometimes impossible to resort to peaceful methods to resolve such conflicts, which usually require a long time to resolve, and here it was necessary to resort to using a rapid mechanism to contain them andSettle them so that they do not develop into armed conflicts, as this mechanism creates buffer zones between the conflicting parties until the appropriate conditions for a peaceful settlement.Because of its importance, it has witnessed great developments and increased in size and in the way it operates. In this regard, this research paper seeks to examine the meaning of these operations and their most important dimensions and developments, especially after the Cold War.
