The main challenges of agriculture in Mauritania: reality and solutions

Abstract

The subject of studying the main agricultural problems in Mauritania is of great importance due to its connection to sustainable local development. Agriculture in Mauritania suffers from several problems, some of which are natural, such as drought and its negative effects on the agricultural sector, and others are non-natural, such as financing and social issues. These problems have had various impacts on the region, such as migration, increased unemployment, lower incomes, and low productivity. Natural problems are among the main obstacles to rice cultivation, in addition to land conflict issues related to the mentality of society. These issues have hindered the development of the agricultural sector and the increase in its productivity.

From this, the research problem is based on the following questions:

• What are the main agricultural potentialities in Mauritania?
• What are the problems faced by the agricultural sector in Mauritania?
• What are the future perspectives for agriculture in Mauritania, and the solutions proposed to address the identified problems?

The study is based on the general hypothesis that achieving sustainable local development depends on solving the problems faced by the agricultural sector in general and on the proper management of economic resources.
The goal of the research is to highlight the main problems faced by modern agriculture in Mauritania, identifying the key potentialities and obstacles, and proposing suggestions and recommendations.
