Abstract

Listening is undoubtedly one of the most crucial skills in English language learning. However, students often encounter various difficulties when listening to English. This research aimed to investigate and analyze some of the challenges students face in their listening skills. Among the most common issues observed in learners during their initial semesters were poor vocabulary, limited exposure to the target language, and a lack of training. These factors significantly contributed to the students' struggles with listening comprehension. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, using questionnaires as data collection instruments. Data were analyzed through techniques of identification, classification, description, and explanation  Interviews with students provided further insights, and listening courses were offered to allo  students to articulate their difficulties with listening. The questionnaire responses revealed that 76% of the participants agreed they have a limited vocabulary, while 70% of the participants do not generally practice listening, and Only 50% of the participants have daily input. In conclusion, these challenges were the primary obstacles encountered by learners in developing their listening skills during their initial semesters at the University of Benghazi, Almarj branch.
