E-learning is an effective tool to improve higher education

Abstract

Higher education, like others in Libya - for the last decade or so - is going through severe crises represented in all its components, starting with the university professor and student, passing through the curricula, all the way to the educational system, school supplies, administrative systems, etc. Therefore, the focus in this modest study will be on one of the means to advance it, which is e-learning, which can help develop educationHigher education, and make it harmonize and keep pace with the information and communications revolution the world is witnessing, and the knowledge revolution, which is e-learning. So, we will clarify the concept of e-learning, and present previous studies about it, and the experiences that some countries, especially Arab ones, have undergone. Before that, we mention its pros and cons, and make a comparison between e-learning and traditional education. The study revealed the following results:1- Scientific and technological progress imposes itself on all fields of life, including higher education, which is the basis of this progress. Therefore, this progress must be kept up with, especially in our country, Libya, which has been suffering from an education crisis in the last ten years.2- E-learning includes different types, including computer-based education and various electronic presentation means, education through the Internet, education in the electronic environment, distance education...etc.
3- Most of the studies conducted on the outcomes of e-learning confirm the effectiveness of this typeEducation develops the competence of students and faculty members, so many countries rushed to introduce the e-learning experience in their universities and educational institutions.
4- E-learning has many advantages and positives, including: reducing the time and effort spent on teaching, making education more fun and exciting, teaching the largest number of students without being restricted by time.The location, the ease of updating the educational courses provided electronically with everything new...etc
5- Among the disadvantages of e-learning is the weak human interaction between the student and the professor, and the lack of a large percentage of teachers and students in experience in dealing with information and communication technology means and techniques.The problem of continuous and frequent outages of the electricity network, which is considered an obstacle as a tool for implementing e-learning in Libya in particular.
